2020年2月12日 突然 Essential Products, Incが事業閉鎖することを発表しました。
An Update from Essential
In October, we introduced Project GEM, a new mobile experience that our hardware, software and cloud teams have been building and testing for the past few years. Our vision was to invent a mobile computing paradigm that more seamlessly integrated with people’s lifestyle needs. Despite our best efforts, we’ve now taken Gem as far as we can and regrettably have no clear path to deliver it to customers. Given this, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations and shutdown Essential.

いやー残念です。
Essential （Essential Products, Inc）は、Androidの創業者で元Googleのアンディ・ルービン氏が2015年11月に立ち上げたスタートアップです。
過去にも色々と身売りの話もありましたが、2018年の5月に「2年間のソフトウェアアップデートと3年間のセキュリティパッチ」をすると明言していましたが、少なくとも、これは守られるのでしょうか？？（2020年5月まで？？）
2018年7月にAmazonでのサマーセールや、
2018年8月にアクセサリーの投げ売りなどもありましたが、
その後は、そのような悪い噂もなく、2019年10月にはPH-1の後継機種とも考えられるProject GEMを発表があったので、かなり期待をしていたのですが、GEMを提供することは叶わなかったようです。
ブログの後半では、
As part of the company wind down, the security update for PH-1 released on February 3 is the last update from the Essential software team. Your PH-1 will continue to work but we will not be providing any additional updates or customer support.
"会社縮小の一環として、2月3日にリリースされたPH-1のセキュリティアップデートは、Essentialソフトウェアチームによる最後の更新プログラムです。 PH-1は引き続き機能しますが、追加の更新やカスタマーサポートは提供しません。"
この通りであれば、毎月セキュリティパッチが提供されていたのですが、前回（日本時間では2月4日）のパッチが最終だったようです。非常に残念です。
もともとサポートのページには、以下にあるように2020年8月までサポートするとあったのですが、、、
Your Essential Phone will be among the first to receive the latest security updates and software fixes. We will provide platform updates for 2 years (August 2019) and security updates for 3 years (August 2020) from the initial launch date.
”Essential Phoneは、最新のセキュリティアップデートとソフトウェア修正プログラムをいち早く受信します。最初のリリース日から2年間（2019年8月）のプラットフォームアップデートと3年間（2020年8月）のセキュリティアップデートを提供します。”
セキュリティパッチが今後提供されないとなると、そろそろ次の機種を検討しない行けなくなりました。
